There are habits you can change to help soften skin and promote a fuller, younger look, but there are some things you come in contact with that you’d never think would harm your skin - like the environment. Air pollution is a big problem with skin health, but you can fight the damage it can cause from the inside out with foods rich in antioxidants to fight free radicals. What are free radicals?

Free Radicals and Your Skin

Free radicals are caused naturally during cellular processes that use oxygen, but the body can keep up with these and fight them off with amino acids like l-arginine, among others. However, it’s the free radicals that come from the contact between your skin and air pollutants that the body may not be ready to handle.

Free radicals take over healthy cells and start replicating. The longer they are left unchecked, the more damage they cause. Once the cell they’ve taken over dies, they take over another one and continue to grow in number. Antioxidants fight this by stopping free radicals from multiplying and kill off these oxidants once and for all.

What About Free Radicals and Aging?

Free radicals are associated with aging because they take over healthy skin cells and eventually kill those cells. The more cells that die, the less healthy the skin will be, and the more signs of aging you’ll notice over time. What foods contain the highest amount of antioxidants?

Foods With Antioxidants

You don’t have to head out to a health food store to find foods that contain high levels of antioxidants. There are fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and more that work wonders for your skin and your overall health.

  • Beans - small red beans, red kidney beans, pinto beans, and black beans are a fantastic choice for antioxidants, not to mention the fiber and protein you’re taking in.
  • Fruits - The fruits with the highest levels of antioxidants include blueberries, sweet cherries, blackberries, prunes, raspberries, strawberries, red delicious apples, cranberries, and black plums.
  • Vegetables - Some of the best vegetables to fight free radical damage are spinach, greens, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, asparagus, cabbage, and pumpkin.
  • BONUS TIP: Green, black and orange pekoe (plain tea bags) are all rich in antioxidants, so you can drink your way to healthier skin by adding these into your daily regimen. Antioxidants are not bound to caffeine, so decaffeinated varieties work just as well.
